The Pre-Preparatory School is situated adjacent to the Day Nursery and caters for children in their last year before they commence full time education.
We balance the timetable between child-initiated learning and adult-led activities; and introduce the children to a range of well-planned learning experiences covering all seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
Each area of learning has a separate room led by staff with specific expertise. We have targeted our recruitment to include a number of graduates and trained early years' teachers; and this has a very positive impact on the children's educational outcomes.
During the latter part of the nursery year, we gradually introduce more structured sessions, particularly in mathematics and literacy. Phonics teaching begins in the spring term of the Pre-Preparatory year for those children who are developmentally ready. The 'Jolly Phonics Scheme' which we focus on, dovetails perfectly with our feeder schools. Mathematics is taught through a variety of practical activities both indoors and out.
Children receive specialist teaching in our Forest School, which has physical activities including science. This environment encourages exercise and an interest in nature.
The Pre-Preparatory School timetable is further enhanced by trips and outings, visits from outside professionals, and the preparation of our Christmas sing song and leavers concert.
Children can move freely between the indoor and outdoor environments throughout the day, whatever the weather!
Our garden includes a Wendy house, teepee, pirate ship, vegetable garden and pets including guinea pigs, rabbits and chickens.
The garden is one of the favourite features of the Nursery and Pre-Preparatory school and provides extensive opportunities for learning and play in a natural and creative environment.
